Wayne Marshall: Coming Soon

In response to “Waking in Nima,” Marshall explores different approaches to urban soundscapes in Kingston, Jamaica, as seen from the Palisadoes Strip. Where Feld’s editing practice tends toward longer stretches of similar material, Marshall draws on his background as a DJ to reorient the sounds of taxi radios to a very different end. Likewise he brings together the ephemeral, diffusive sounds of radio with the highly “present” through conversation with a cab driver about Jamaican radio while traveling, blurring the lines between more traditional ethnographic methods, observational documentation and soundscape creation.
